About Us

Holy Cross Abbey is a Monastery of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance (Trappists) sheltered by the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Cistercians dedicate their life to seeking God according to the sixth-century Rule of Saint Benedict, living the vows of obedience, stability, and conversion of life in the monastic School for the Lord's Service. Manual labor is characteristic of Cistercian life. Our work includes hospitality and care of retreatants in our Guest House and the representation of monastic gifts in our Gift Shop, in addition to the operation of the Monastery Bakery, our chief means of support.

Our Products

We have been producing wonderful products in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for nearly 50 years. Respecting our traditional methods, we are committed to the standard of excellence established by our founders. Our Creamed Honey, first made in 1999, has been well received locally and nationally. Our bakery is being renovated so there are a very limited number of Fruitcakes available for sale in our GIFT SHOP only. First come, first served. Monastery Truffles are made specially for us by DeFluri's Chocolates of Martinsburg, WV.

Creamed Honey

Our production technique assures and maintains the quality and consistency of every item of our product list. Most commercially processed honeys are heated to high temperatures that kill the honey's natural enzymes and nutrients. The Monastery Bakery at Holy Cross Abbey uses a temperature control system which ensures the nutritional quality is maintained and lets the true honey flavor shine through.
